So You’ve Got a Blog … How Do You Kick Start the Traffic Flow?

4 June, 2007 (21:46) | Tips & Tricks | By: Steve

I’ve now been working on my blog for a couple of days, and as yet … I’ve had a grand total of 0 visitors, as you can see from the Google Analytics screenshot below.

So, the question is, how do you start getting traffic to come to your site?

There are a few answers to this particular, some which will have a quicker result than others, but all of which will work eventually.

  1. The first option you have is to leave your blog as it is, regularly adding posts other content.  Eventually, Google will find your site and start to index your content pages.  There is never an exact science to this, and there is no guaranteed period in which Google will start to do its thing, unfortunately you just have to play the waiting game.
  2. The second option, is to give Google a helping hand in finding your site, and that is by starting to post links back to your site in various places:
    • Forums - find some forums related to your blog topic, and either start your own threads, or reply to threads that have already been started.
    • Blogs - find other blogs relevant to the content you are posting.  Make a comment on the articles they are posting, or better still, offer to add them to your blogroll in return for them adding you to theirs.  The more links you have back to your site the better, and the same applies to their site.

In both the above cases, always make sure you include a link back to your site in your signature.  Someone who reads your post is likely to click on your link and see what your site is about … and that’s when the game starts.  When Google indexes the page where you posted your link, it will then be able to follow it to your own site, and start the indexing process.  When this happens, if your articles are keyword rich, and easy to search for, you will start to get traffic from Google searches.

My next job tonight is to start looking for some blogs and forums where I can start to post, and see how much traffic we can direct over here.  I’ll report back soon.
